E – Waste

A lot of talks are going on about the amount of e-waste generated. “e-waste” is nothing but electronic waste consisting of broken and non-usable electronic components or appliance.
It has become a major point of concern as many of these electronic wastes are toxic and non-biodegradable.  The major sources of these e-wastes are IT and telecommunication equipment, household appliances various consumer electronics etc.
Because of the technological advancement new and new technologies and equipment are showing up with a very little though about the way it will affect the environment.  
But that’s not all. Many people think that new technology and equipment and devices are more effective so they throw away the old ones, even if there usable life is still remaining. This also generates a lot of e-wastes.
    So, to prevent e-wastes from generating and contaminating, various organizations like Nokia etc. have come up with implementations so that people can give them old equipment to them and they will recycle and reuse them.
   Other organizations and governmental institutions should contribute and help us to cut down this generation of e-waste and help save our planet.

A lot of waste is generated when construction or demolition activities take place. This waste mostly consists of non-biodegradable wastes such as blocks of concrete, plaster, wood etc.
These wastes are heavy and often require very large spaces and usually are found right in front of the roads and also in communal waste bins. We have all seen examples of this, large piles of junk kept on the road resulting in congestion and traffic jams.
It is approximated that 10-12 million of construction waste is generated in India. In other countries, one has to pay huge amount of fees for dumping construction & demolition waste.
I accordance with this, private waste management companies and firms receive incentives for collecting these wastes and treating it properly and reusing it. But these kinds of cooperative efforts are missing in India.
Though India lacks in this, there are small agencies and firm that work on generating and treating this waste so that it can be reused in some other material.
This is a very small scale activity which does not make a sizable difference to the amount of waste generated. CDE, one of the leading companies in the world, have come up with a plant in india which can recycle construction and demolition waste. With this new technology one can get recycled aggregate and sand of profound quality.
Other movement is the WRAP Aggregate Program is a European body which has promised to use recycled aggregates in any forms as concrete, bricks etc.  
These types of waste management programs and with the help of government programs, one can make a huge difference in management of these construction related waste and recycle and reuse them.

Waste Management = Green Environment

Waste management by an individual or company is a very tedious task and is not as easy as it sounds. So, to implement this, one needs to support the guys doing this and contribute.

Waste is actually classified under two heads, one the solid waste and liquid waste. Solid wastes include industrial waste, municipal wastes, e-wastes etc. Liquid wastes include sewage wastes etc.  

Till date, loads and loads of waste are dumped everywhere without any treatment, which in turn adds to the pollution of natural environment and indirectly leads to phenomenon of climate change and global warming.
If these loads and loads of wastes were to be remained untreated, it can largely affect land, the crops, it can also effect in unusual climate change etc.
So the effective way to dispose off liquid waste is through effluent treatment plants and sewage plants. Solid wastes are disposed off in the same way and treated.

Plasma Gasification technology is a new method of disposing hazardous waste.
·        Except radioactive wastes, any other types of wastes can be destructed using this technology.
·        This technology reduces the dioxin/furan formation to a very negligible amount.
·        Temperatures in plasma gasification technology can be changed rapidly.
·        It generates reusable vitrified material in comparison with increnation which generates toxic ash.

As new and new technologies come in, the implementation level should go to a higher level. The awareness level in the public for sustainable living is spreading but as implementation remains minimal, the disastrous phenomenon still prevails.

In 1921, Albert Einstein won a noble price for his contribution in photo electric effect. It is this concept that has made scientists wonder about the possibilities of obtaining energy from sun.
In present day, many organizations and government bodies around the globe has taken steps to increase these types of energy sources to be used. This increased used of alternate energy has surely made a positive impact, but still the search for renewable energy is culminating in solar energy.
An innovation, amorphous silicon thin film modules, has made this search for renewable energy stop.
These modules when installed generate electricity from sunlight, without any worries about pollution of nature, sound etc.

Given the regular reminders we get of the ongoing disaster from greenhouse effect, climate change and shortage of water etc. sustainable living has become an obvious way to save our planet.
But as everyone knows, going sustainable and changing our way of living is not as easy as it sounds.

Carbon footprint is nothing but the measure of carbon dioxide we produce daily going about doing our daily activities.

Due to the phenomenon of global warming, the scientists are working overtime. Some scientists are trying to understand this phenomenon of global warming and trying to find ways to mitigate this, while others are focusing on Carbon Footprint.
And there are other scientists who are coming up with rather unpleasant ways to alter nature and feed the human needs.

Well it is not all different; it is a cosmic way of the same. Scientists propose to spray the atmosphere with thousands of ton of material which reflect sunlight.
These sprayed particles will form a protective layer over the earth and disperse the sunlight. As lesser amount of sunlight will come to earth, the earth will be protected from the phenomenon of climate change and global warming.


Scientists thought about the idea of oceans gobbling up all the access carbon from the atmosphere.
Phytoplankton, a kind of life form usually found on the surface of the ocean can eat up all the carbon. Scientists have thought to increase the amount of these beings and so for this they are going to pump large amounts of iron fillings into the ocean.
When these beings bloom, they will trap all the carbon from the atmosphere.

Conserving Water

Our top priority is to save and conserve water, especially freshwater by seepage and increasing storage through rainwater harvesting and other storage methods.
We can recycle and reuse all industrial and domestic sewage and significantly reduce the use of freshwater and conserve it.
Good water management task is huge, urgent and needs collaboration through which it can be achieved easily.
Running on empty taps!!
This is not a very distant thought, if our insatiable thirst for water does not end, our taps may run out of it in near future.

  • Running a tap can use 10-14 liters of water a minute. That is enough for a small bath of 5 minutes.

  • One drip per second wastes 1,200 liters of water in a year. That’s around 4 liters a day.

So awareness should be spread and various procedures should be taken into account and public level as well as government level to save and preserve water so that our future generations can survive and use it.

Melting of ice – a hot topic?

Ice plays an important role in shaping our planets environment. The role played by ice is a very significant one, what it does is that it reflects all the unwanted heat of the sun from the earth’s environment and keeps it cool. In places where there is minimal or no ice, absorb the sun’s heat and heat up the environment.
As the ice melts away more and more surface is available for the trapping of heat and because the earth traps heat the ice further melts and this cycle goes on.
Because of the above phenomenon, climate change occurs. Due to climate change, for example in the artic areas, affects lives all over the world. The melting of ice phenomenon is not only limited to the artic regions but is also happening in the mountainous areas.
Ice holds a large supply of fresh water which is an essential part of the eco system. But when climate change occurs, our supply of fresh water i.e. ice, melts and because of this the supply of freshwater is reduced and affects all life forms which are dependent on fresh water supply.
Melting of polar ice sheets and ice glaciers etc. the sea level rises and people living in low lying areas and coastal regions are threatened by this rise in the level of water.
Through various mass media like the paper, magazines, internet and various governments held programs on environment, awareness about the effects and consequences of this change in climate should be created and spread to people of all walks of life. People should also be tough to fight this and preserve and conserve the environment.
Through very small and minimal efforts one can make a huge difference in minimizing impacts and saving our planet.

Technologies in Schools

Today technology has incorporated in the schools in so many ways; we seldom realize the role it plays in our life. With the use of technologies like computers and internet in schools, students are open to a massive amount of information on any topic they want which helps students attain expertise in their respected subjects.

More and more schools today recognize the use of technology as an instructional tool for the students as well as the teachers. Technology helps students of all ages, irrespective of where they are and what they do, to gain knowledge of whichever subject they want.

With the help of E-schools students now can take up any course they want and can do it regardless of place, time and age. Online examinations provide a very easy way to give exams and with the computerized checking system, give more efficient results.

Teachers on the other hand, can also gain benefit from the technology. For example, new teachers can gain expertise in their area of teaching which can make her teaching more efficient and he/she can then easily explain to the students.

In the classroom, technologies like a projector can help teachers display visuals on the respective subjects which make learning easier and simple.

The school management also takes advantage of technology and can monitor students’ achievements and keep track of their annual records. It also helps school administration to take proper decisions and also helps in implementing policies.

However, many schools that still continues to teach in the traditional way and don’t have any knowhow about technology, strive to bring about the use of technology in their day-to-day curriculum.

Schools should understand that technology is a key component of this century. It helps students build up on their learning skills and come up to be lifelong learners.


The film “An Inconvenient Truth” by Al-Gore, Nobel Peace Laureate – who has done extensive work on climate change – highlighted the issue of global warming and the need for public awareness on climate change.
Power conservation, an issue on the horizon of crises, yet unnoticed by those who has the potential to do it – The Youth!
So, below are some areas where a common youth consumes electricity along with some measures to curtail the usage:

Ø Cellphones: Cellphones are a very essential part of a youth’s life with which they communicate, learn, play, organize and do many other stuff. But a very little notice is given on the way their battery charge.
Overcharging i.e. still keeping it plugged in after it has been fully charged wastes a lot of electricity and harms the phone too. Another phenomenon of wastage happens when one forgets to switch of the charger after unplugging the phone.
This has now taken care of by some visual reminders which can be downloaded and used. Cellphone companies and manufacturers too should now come up with an audio reminder for further prevention of wastage of electricity.

Ø Laptops & Netbooks: The markets today are flooding with different kinds of Laptops and computers but not much is being done to take care of the power consumption of the same.
One should always keep their laptops or computers in sleep or hibernation mode when they are not using it. A laptop in sleep/hibernation mode consumes 35watts/hr contrasting to 135watts/hr used by an active screen.

Ø Televisions: The television is the most common source of entertainment and news today and is used in almost all houses today. But nobody thinks about using it in an energy efficient way.
The way we check the picture quality and the screen size, we should check also how energy efficient it is and how much power it will consume. One should look for an energy star rating and do proper calculation before buying a television.
LCD screen TV’s are more energy efficient than their corresponding plain ones. In fact LCD TV’s save power by almost 60%.

Ø Air Conditioners: People find it difficult to stay without an AC in their environment but they fail to realize the impact it creates on the earth’s environment.
Unaware of the fact that the ideal temperature for cooling is 24o C. People don’t clean and change the air filters regularly hence failing to realize the cost of electricity they are paying for as the AC requires more time for cooling.
Switching off an AC after the intended space is cool enough will save 10% of power.

Ø Awareness: The main thing today’s youth should do is self-awareness. Understand on how much our basic facilities cost and how much electricity they consume will help in knowing what steps he/she should take to curtain them.
If one person starts saving, though it is a small amount, but slowly and steadily the whole world will start saving and that will lead towards a more energy efficient and greener environment.

Green IT

Green IT indicates a method of computing which uses an energy sufficient technology creating a very marginal impact on the environment. Now we know that many companies are striving to make this achievable but this can only be achieved if our huge population of students, using computers in their daily chores, participate and make it achievable.
Some people misunderstand the term and think of only the study of such material. But it also means creating or manufacturing such energy efficient products to create a minimal impact on the environment. Also, it refers to the disposing off of computers and electronics in an eco-efficient way.
Enlisted below are some ways in which one can make Green IT prosper and achievable:

  • Don’t throw off your old, used mobile phones. Instead recycle them at your nearest mobile store dealer.
  • ·        Instead of getting your phone bills via post opt for an e-statement which will save paper and eventually save the environment.
  • ·        Use virtualization techniques and cloud computing techniques. This reduces the network equipment and also makes the working environment energy efficient and compact.
  • ·        Nowadays many computers come with a Energy Star rating which signifies it to be a power efficient and ecofriendly computer. Make sure you buy your computers which are rated.

The awareness of Green IT is on a continuous rise. One should not wait for someone or something to happen. One should note that he/she can make things happen. Even a small contribution can make a huge difference.

Every Drop Counts

The ever-increasing demand for water around the world is increasing day by day, it is very crucial for us to save water on a daily basis. And as the saying goes “saving starts at home”, here are some points one can ponder on to save water:

  • ·        Rather than washing utensils in running water, fill up the basin first and then wash your utensils in it.
  • ·        Fruits and vegetables can be collected in a pan for washing instead of washing them in running tap water.
  • ·        Instead of thawing food in running water, use a microwave to thaw food.
  • ·        Recycle waste water from cooking and washing to water plants.
  • ·        Keep the tap turned off while brushing your teeth and shaving.
